If you fancy yourself as the next JK Rowling, let your pen loose at this five-week introduction to creative writing. You'll kick-start your writing, learn about characterisation, dialogue and plot. This course will give you confidence in your writing ability and enjoy the creative writing process!

This is a creative writing introductory course and is suited to writers who have not had formal training in creative writing. It will focus on fiction, short stories and creative non-fiction.

Week 1 focuses on the creative writing process. We emphasise that creative writing which is effective and passionate – which moves readers and makes them want to read on – is typically achieved when the writer has an understanding of the actual process involved.

Week 2 focuses on characters and how to bring them to life. What do you need to know about your characters and how do you make their feelings come across to the reader? We also look at effective points of view. This has a significant impact on how the story is told, what the reader 'sees' and how the plot unfolds.

Week 3 focuses on plot, story and how events unfold. We look at the essential elements of plot including classic story structure. When it comes to keeping the reader involved and engaged, what is the best sequence of events to make your story compelling?

Week 4 focuses on dialogue. It may seem like such a simple thing, but it can actually be one of the most difficult things to get right in creative writing. We look at whether dialogue is important to your story and how much of it you should use. We also look at how to piece together all the elements so far in coherent form.

In the final week, we look at detail and description. We cover what kind of detail is important in a story and how can we find the right balance between evocative description and heavy, overladen prose. We look at what works – and what doesn't. We also cover the importance of themes and how to determine what they are.
